The chief musician of a German Protestant (Evangelical) church, whose duties comprised teaching school as well as selecting, composing, rehearsing, and performing music appropriate to liturgical celebrations and public municipal occasions. Bach was Kantor at the church of St. Thomas and its associated school in Leipzig from 1723 until his death. See also Cantor.
